Larger Home Extension Scheme – After 30 May 2019
 
Under current legislation a single storey extension is considered permitted development not requiring planning permission as long as it does not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than 4m if a detached house or more than 3m for any other house
 
This limit was increased to 8m if a detached house or 6m for any other house, but was time limited so that construction had to be completed by 30th May 2019.
 
The government have issued draft planning reform legislation which proposes removal of the time limit so that the right for larger extensions to dwellinghouses is made permanent.
 
It has not been introduced into law yet however the planning portal website has been updated to reflect the above, as you can see here:
